Born in Dartmouth, England, he served as a Private in the 8th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, British Army. In actions at Somme, France, on July 20, 1916, when Private Veale heard that a wounded officer was lying out in a corn field fifty yards of the enemy, he went out to search for him.
