Born in Llandaff, Wales, of Norwegian parents, Harald Dahl, the joint owner of a successful shipping business and his second wife Sofie Magdalene Hesselberg. Within just a few weeks in 1920, Dahl's seven year old half-sister, Astrid died of appendicitis and his father died of pneumonia.
