Blanden, Leander b. October 19, 1830 d. April 21, 1904 Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. In late 1862, Blanden joined the 95th Illinois Infantry as a major. The unit was mustered out of Rockford. He participated in the battles of Fort Gibson, Champion's Hill, and Vicksburg. After the death of Colonel Thomas W. Humphrey at the Battle of Guntown on June 10, 1864, Blanden was given command of the regiment along with the rank of colonel. He led the 95th through the campaigns for Nashville, Atlanta, and Mobile. Carpenter, Cyrus Clay b. November 29, 1829 d. May 29, 1898 Iowa Governor. He was a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives in 1858 and from 1884 to 1886, and Governor from 1872 to 1876. Major William Williams, the founder of Fort Dodge, Iowa, was born Dec 6, 1796 in Greensburgh, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, and came to the Fort Dodge area in 1850 with the troops. As a military commander on the prairie, he led the rescue of many settlers who had fallen under attack by the Indians at Storm Lake, while a dreadful blizzard hindered their efforts.
