Archer, Jimmy (James Patrick) b. May 13, 1883 d. March 29, 1958 Major League Baseball Player from 1905 through 1917. At the time he was one of the few pros who was not born in the U.S.A. He gained fame as catcher for the Chicago Cubs from 1909 until 1917. He invented the snap throw from the crouched position. He was well known for his ability to throw out base runners. His throwing arm was an inch shorter than his other arm due to an injury. He caught for the Cubs during their National League Championship season of 1910. Holmes, Adoniram Judson b. March 2, 1842 d. January 21, 1902 US Congressman. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, enlisting as a Private in Company D, 24th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company F on March 7, 1864, to 1st Lieutenant of Company K on May 12, 1865 and was honorably mustered out on July 27, 1865. Shelley, Kate (Catherine Carroll) b. September 25, 1865 d. January 21, 1912 American Folk Figure. On the night of July 6, 1881, fifteen year old Kate Shelly braved a severe storm and flooding to help rescue crew members of a train that had plunged from a collapsed viaduct into rain-swollen Honey Creek in Boone County, Iowa. It was also her intention to warn the scheduled passenger trains of the washout. Her heroism helped rescue two survivors of the first disaster and prevented another.
