Jovellanos, Gaspar Melchor de b. January 5, 1744 d. November 27, 1811 Statesman and Author. Born in Gijón, Asturias, Spain, he served as Minister of Justice under King Carlos IV. He was also an important representative of the Illustration movement and a leading social reformer. A close friend of the painter Francisco de Goya, he was imprisoned for his work against the Spanish monarchy and later exiled for opposing Napoleon's occupation of his country.
