Under the pseudonym Johnny Darrell, he recorded the songs, "The Son Of Hickory Holler's Tramp" in 1967, and "As Long The Wind Blows" in 1968. Both recordings were chart top successes for him. Named for the Civil War general whom his father admired, he led his team to the mythical Tennessee state football championship in 1923 with an 8-1-1 record.
