Appling, Lucius 'Luke' b. April 2, 1907 d. January 3, 1991 Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Known as "Old Aches and Pains", played shortstop 20 seasons (1930 to 1950), all with the Chicago White Sox. His finest season came in 1936 when he led the American League with a .388 batting average (the highest average ever for a shortstop) and drove in 128 runs. Bell, Hiram Parks b. January 19, 1827 d. August 16, 1907 US Congressman. He was a member of the Georgia state senate in 1861, before serving as a colonel in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He became a member of the Confederate Congress (1864 to 1865). He was then a U.S. Representative from Georgia from 1873 to 1875, and 1877 to 1879. Blackwell, Jerry b. April 26, 1949 d. January 22, 1995 Professional Wrestler. When he debuted in the AWA in December of 1979 he was called "Farmer Blackwell," but he intensely disliked that name and insisted that he be called Jerry "Crusher" Blackwell. He held the AWA tag titles with Ken Patera. For a man of over 400 pounds he was very athletic, and was able to do a "standing dropkick," which was considered an amazing feat for a man of his size. Samples, Junior b. April 10, 1926 d. November 13, 1983 Comedian. He was born Alvin Samples Jr. in Cumming Georgia. He made his living as a farmer, sawmill worker, stock car driver and carpenter and did not enter show business until age 40. He was discovered after a story he told about catching a record-setting fish was recorded by a Game Commission investigator and played on the radio.
