He was an admirer of Nora Barnacle (who was later author James Joyce's wife) and model for the 'Michael Furey' character in "The Dead" in "Dubliners". Brendan, Saint b. 484 d. 577 Roman Catholica Saint, Explorer. Abbot and traveller, traditionally the founder of the monastery of Clonfert in County Galway (561), and other monasteries in Ireland and Scotland. The Latin Navigation of St Brendan (c.1050) recounts his legendary voyage to a land of saints far to the west and north, possibly the Hebrides and the Northern Isles, or even Iceland. Jarlath, Saint Saint. He was the first Bishop of Tuam and he established a monastery where many future saints such as St Brendan and St Colman would begin their religous lives.
