Bickford, Matthew b. April 10, 1839 d. April 18, 1918 Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Corporal in Company G, 8th Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 22, 1863. His citation reads “Gallantry in the charge of the "volunteer storming party." Higginson, Ella b. 1861 d. December 27, 1940 Poet. Born in Council Grove, Kansas, in 1888 moved to Bellingham, Washington, where she and her husband opened a drug store on Elk Street. She wrote and published poetry and short stories in national journals including McClures, Harper's Monthly, and Colliers. Her best known work, a poem entitled "Four Leaf Clover," was first published by West Shore Magazine in 1890. In June 1931, she was made poet laureate of Washington State. Kalloch, Isaac Smith b. July 10, 1832 d. December 9, 1887 Mayor of San Francisco. A Baptist minister and native of Maine, Kalloch arrived in California looking to spread the Baptist religion. In 1879 he decided to run for mayor of San Francisco. It wasn't long before he came under attack from the San Francisco Chronicle's editor-in-chief, Charles DeYoung, who was backing another candidate. DeYoung, with the hopes of taking Kalloch out of the mayoral race, accused the minister of having an affair.
