Davis, Samuel b. October 6, 1842 d. November 27, 1863 Confederate soldier Sam Davis was captured behind enemy lines while acting as a courier. He refused to reveal the other members of his unit, or their sources of intelligence, and was hanged as a spy. His steadfast loyalty to his comrades, and his manly bearing during his trial and execution, earned him the respect of friends and enemies alike, and he became a martyr for the Confederate cause. Gooch, John Saunders 'Colonel Jack' b. June 7, 1842 d. December 23, 1915 Civil War Confederate Army Officer. The son of Dr John Claiborne Gooch, builder and owner of Goochland, a stately plantation home in Smyrna, Tennessee, he was best known for the organizing Company E of the 20th Tennessee Infantry regiment in Smyrna during the Spring of 1861 (the Goochland property was used for drill training).
