  South Carolina Governor, US Senator. He served as Governor of South Carolina from 1935 to 1939 and from 1943 to 1945, and as US Senator from 1945 until his death. He was the father of former U.S. Representative Elizabeth Johnston Patterson of Spartanburg, South Carolina.
