Covode, John b. March 17, 1808 d. January 11, 1871 US Congressman. He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and grew up working on a farm and served an apprenticeship to a blacksmith; later he worked in woolen mills, first in New York, then in Lockport, Pennsylvania. Speculating in the coal business, he also became an owner of a woolen mill, invested in the Pennsylvania Canal and the Pennsylvania Central Railroad, and was a justice of the peace and a state legislator.
