Born in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, to John Anthony Schwab and his wife Pauline Farabaugh, Charles Schwab early came to the attention of industrial baron Andrew Carnegie. Schwab rose to the presidency of Carnegie Steel by 1897, and became first president of the newly-organized United States Steel in 1901. For three seasons (1955 to 1958), he played at the forward and guard positions in the National Basketball Association with the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals.
