Buffum, Robert b. July 7, 1828 d. July 20, 1871 Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in Company H, 21st Ohio Infantry, Union Army. In April 1862, he was one of the 22 men which included 2 civilians who penetrated nearly 200 miles south into Confederate enemy territory. There they captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Georgia in an attempt to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and Atlanta. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on March 25, 1863. Czolgosz, Leon b. May 5, 1873 d. October 29, 1901 Assassin of President William McKinley. Born in 1873 in Alpena, Michigan, he was one of seven brothers and sisters of poor Russian-Polish immigrants. Gillette, Chester Ellsworth b. August 9, 1883 d. March 30, 1908 Criminal. Accused, tried and convicted of murdering pregnant acquaintance Grace M. Brown. He was electrocuted at Auburn State Prison on March 30, 1908 and buried at Soule Cemetery. The official registry card says only "unmarked grave" and the location identified by people who attended the trial is not clear. Most people maintain that his unmarked grave is under the road in the upper part of the cemetery.
