Hammond, John b. August 17, 1827 d. May 28, 1889 Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. He was a Polytechnic Engineer when he volunteered to enlist into the Union Army of the Potomac as a Private at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Promoted through the ranks to Major, he was assigned as a Colonel in the US 5th Cavalry.
