Newport, Reece Marshall b. May 27, 1838 d. November 1, 1912 Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. When the Civil War broke out, Newport joined the army as assistant quartermaster. By the end of the war, he rose in the quartermaster's department from colonel to chief quartermaster of the Baltimore depot. On March 13, 1865, he received the brevet brigadier general commission "for faithful and meritorious services during the war." Sanborn, Gen. John Benjamin b. December 5, 1826 d. May 16, 1904 Civil War Union Brigadier General. After the fall of Fort Sumter, Sanborn was appointed as the adjutant general of the state of Minnesota. He oversaw the organization and equiping of five regiments, a battalion, and two batteries to defend the Union.
