Medhurst, Rev. Dr Walter Henry b. 1796 d. 1857 Congregationalist Missionary. He was best-known as one of the earliest translators of The Bible into Chinese language editions. In 1816, he travelled to Mallacca with the London Missionary Society, which was at the time a printing center. He learned Malay and was active in missionary projects throughout China before founding the London Missionary Society Press in Shanghai. Richard, Henry b. April 3, 1812 d. August 20, 1888 Congregationalist minister who became a crusader for world peace and became MP for Merthyr Tydfil in 1868. Sharpe, Samuel b. 1801 d. 1832 Folk Figure. A Creole slave, he was a leader in the Christmas Rebellion, which began on December 25, 1831, at the Kensington Estate in Jamaica. It was caused by the mistaken belief that the emancipation of the slaves was already granted by the British Parliament. The rebellion was put down within two weeks and most of the ringleaders, including Sharpe, were hanged.
