Smith, Samuel Rodmon b. April 20, 1841 d. September 20, 1912 Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as Captain of Company C, 4th Delaware Infantry. On February 5, 1865 at Rowanty Creek, Virginia, he swam the partially frozen creek under enemy fire and established a safe crossing for his troops. He was awarded the CMOH for this act in 1895. Smyth, Thomas Alfred b. December 25, 1832 d. April 9, 1865 Civil War Union Brigadier General. Enlisted as member of the 24th Pennsylvania Infantry, a six-month unit in 1861. After is was mustered out he was appointed Major of the 1st Delaware Volunteer Infantry, advancing to its Lieutenant Colonel in December 1862 and Colonel and commander in February 1863. He participated in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg (where he commanded a brigade). Tilton, James b. June 1, 1745 d. May 14, 1822 United States War of 1812 General, Continental Congressman. When the Revolutionary War began he joined as a surgeon and in 1777 was put in charge of the military hospital located in Princeton, New Jersey. Was appointed by the Delaware General Assembly as a member of the Continental Congress and served from 1783 to 1784. Served a number of years in the Delaware General Assembly. Wales, John b. July 31, 1783 d. December 3, 1863 US Senator. Appointed by Delaware Governor's Thomas Stockton, Joseph Maull, William Temple and William Tharp as Secretary of State of Delaware and served from 1845 to 1849. Elected to represent Delaware in the United States Senate and served from February 3, 1849 to March 3, 1851. Was one of the founder's of the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware.
