Along with explorer Salomon August Andree and photographer Nils Strindberg, he made an attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon. Gullstrand, Allvar b. June 5, 1862 d. July 28, 1930 Medical Scientist. Born at Landskrona, Sweden, he was a physician, ophthalmologist and a professor at the ophthalmological clinic in Stockholm. For his study of astigmatism of the cornea which led to the design of more effective corrective lenses for the condition, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine in 1911.
