Allman, Duane b. November 20, 1946 d. October 29, 1971 Musician. The Allman family was living near Norfolk, Virgina, when Army Sergeant Willis Alllman was murdered on the day after Christmas, 1949. His widow, Geraldine, took her sons Gregg, two, and Duane, three, to live in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 1959 while on a family trip the boys saw B.B. King perform. Colquitt, Alfred Holt b. April 20, 1824 d. March 26, 1894 Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, Georgia Governor. Along with Brigadier General Joseph Finegan, he was in command of the defense of Florida from Union troops at the Battle of Olustee on February 20, 1864. The battle, while small compared to other battles of the war, was the largest in Florida. After their defeat at Olustee, the Union forces remained in Jacksonville until the end of the war, not venturing out in a significant force again. Cook, Philip b. July 31, 1817 d. May 21, 1894 Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. The son of transplanted Virginians, he was educated at Oglethorpe University, near Milledgeville, and later at the University of Virginia, from whose law school he graduated in 1841. Edwards, Harry Stillwell b. April 23, 1855 d. October 22, 1938 Author. He wrote a number of poems, articles, and novels, as well as being the editor of the Macon (Georgia) Telegraph newspaper. Lamar, John Basil d. September 15, 1862 Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Served as a Colonel and aide-de-camp to General Howell Cobb, his brother-in-law and close friend. He was mortally wounded on September 14, 1862 by men of the Army of the Potomac's 1st New Jersey Brigade while vainly trying to rally Cobb's Brigade at Crampton's Gap, Maryland. Reed (Napier), Elizabeth b. November 9, 1845 d. May 3, 1935 Folk Figure. She is distinguished as being the inspiration for the Allman Brothers Band song, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". Reid, J. Neel b. 1885 d. 1926 Noted Architect. Considered in his day to be a "Southern icon," many of the homes and buildings he and his firm designed in the South have become landmarks. Each year the J. Neel Reid Prize honors rising architects in Georgia. Two books about him and his work have been published, "Architecture of Neel Reid in Georgia" by James Grady and "J.
