  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A Stoddard, New Hampshire native, his Civil War service began on August 29, 1861 with the rank of Captain in the 30th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The following year, on April 24th, promotion to Major was earned. He continued to move up the chain of command with promotions of Lieutenant Colonel on Januaury 24, 1863 followed by succeeding to become commander of the 30th Illinois on June 13, 1863 with the rank of Colonel.
