Two years later he was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy and then went on to pilot training in Texas. He received a master's degree in meteorology from the California Institute of Technology. Served during the Wars with the Plains Indians first as a Private, later First Sergeant, in Company H, 7th United States Cavalry. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 5, 1878 for his actions during the Battle of the Little Big Horn, where he was wounded in the buttocks.
