Allison, William Boyd b. March 2, 1829 d. August 14, 1908 US Congressman, US Senator. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa State Militia during the Civil War, and assisted Governor Samuel J. Kirkland in raising regiments for the Union Army. He was elected as a Republican to represent Iowa's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1863 to 1871. Clark, William Hyde b. February, 1836 d. October 10, 1872 Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, then as a Major and Assisstant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Francis J. Herron, then as the Assisstant Mustering Officer for the Western Division of Pennsylvania. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". Davenport, Ira Nelson b. October 8, 1887 d. July 17, 1941 American Olympic Athlete. Ira first became known when he was a student at Tonakawa, Oklahoma when he established a new world's record for preparatory schools in the 100-yard dash. At the 1908 Oklahoma Interscholastic meet held in Norman he clocked 9.8 in the 100-yard dash. When he won this race he was wearing improvised spikes, running on a clay track and twice had been penalized a yard for a false start thus making him run a 102-yard race. Healey, George W. b. 1842 d. 1913 Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War as a Private in Company E, 5th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in action at Newnan, Georgia, on July 29, 1864. His citation reads: "When nearly surrounded by the enemy, captured a Confederate soldier, and with the aid of a comrade who joined him later, captured 4 other Confederate soldiers, disarmed the 5 prisoners, and brought them all into the Union lines." Hempstead, Stephen b. October 1, 1812 d. February 16, 1883 Former Governor of Iowa. Hempstead was Dubuque's first attorney. He helped represent the northern part of the Iowa Territory at the Territoral Legislature in Burlington, Iowa. He later served as one of the Dubuque County delegates to the Iowa constiutional convention of 1848. Hempstead also helped develop the laws which became the code of Iowa in 1851. Plumbe Jr., John b. 1809 d. 1857 Plumbe was one of the very first photographers in America, taking up the practice very shortly after Samuel F. B. Morse brought the idea from France in 1839. The first professional photographer on Washington D. C., some of Plumbe's work consists of the very earliest daguerreotypes of the U. S. Capitol Building. In addition to his photographic endeavors, beginning as early as 1836, he was a staunch proponent and agitator for a transcontinental railroad from the Great Lakes to the Pacific. Straub, Paul Frederick b. July 3, 1865 d. November 25, 1937 Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Served as a Surgeon, 36th Infantry, U.S. Volunteers. At Alos, Zambales, Luzon, Philippine Islands, December 21, 1899 Surgeon Straub’s Company was under a heavy enemy fire attack. Exposing himself to the enemy in repelling with pistol fire an at risk of his own life, went to rescue a wounded officer and carried him to safety. Surgeon Paul F.
