Bates, George Joseph b. February 25, 1891 d. November 1, 1949 US Congressman. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives from 1918 to 1924, and served as mayor of Salem from 1924 to 1937. In 1937, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fifth Congress and to the six succeeding Congresses, serving until his death in an airplane accident. Bresnahan, Patrick Francis b. May 1, 1872 d. January 29, 1940 Peacetime Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Watertender in the United States Navy. His citation reads "Serving on board the USS Iowa for extraordinary heroism at the time of the blowing-out of the manhole plate of boiler D on board that vessel, 25 January 1905."
