Adams, John Couch b. June 5, 1819 d. January 21, 1892 Astronomer. He deduced the existence of the planet Neptune in 1845. Although his calculations were given to the Astronomer Royal, the latter did nothing about them, so a German observer was the first to actually spot the planet in 1846. Cockroft, John Douglas b. May 27, 1897 d. September 18, 1967 Scientist. Nobel Prize Winner (Physics, 1951). Taught by Sir Horace Lamb, later a colleague of Peter Kapitsa and Lord Rutherford in the Cavendish Laboratories. A member of the Tizard Mission to the Us in 1940 and contributed ot the Manhattan Project. Member of UK Atomic Energy Authority 1954-1959. MacCarthy, Desmond b. May 20, 1877 d. June 7, 1952 Author. British literary and dramatic critic. Born in Plymouth, he was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took a History degree. In 1903, he began to write book reviews and dramatic criticism for The Speaker. From 1907 to 1910, he edited The New Quarterly. Ramsey, Frank b. February 22, 1903 d. January 19, 1930 Scientist and Philosopher. Mathmatician who founded the "Ramsey Theory". Translated the works of Wittgenstein, which whom he was friends. Wittgenstein, Ludwig Josef Johann b. April 26, 1889 d. April 29, 1951 One of the most original philosophers of the last century. His most noted texts are the 'Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus' and the later'Philosophical Investigations', which more or less entirely refutes the earlier work.
