He served during World War II as a Private First Class in the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on Roi Island, Kwajalein Atoll, in the Marshall Islands on February 1, 1944. Peterson, Mark b. April 19, 1960 d. July 7, 2011 Professional Soccer Player. He was a star forward and striker for the original Seattle Sounders franchise of the North American Soccer League (NASL). He played for the Sounders from 1980 to 1983, appearing in 99 games and scoring 48 goals. In 1980 he finished second in league balloting for NASL Rookie of the Year honors, and two years later he was named as the NASL's Player of the Year.
