Enlisted in the Army at New York on November 3, 1865 and served as a First Sergeant, Troop H, 1st U.S. Cavalry. At the Battle White Bird Canyon, Idaho, June 17, 1876, he was detailed with 6 men to hold a commanding position against hostile Indians. He held it with gallantry until the forward troops fell back.
