Crane, Ichabod B. b. July 18, 1787 d. October 5, 1857 Literary Figure. Namesake for the Washington Irving's legendary "Sleepy Hollow" victim. According to legend, Washington Irving met the real Ichabod Crane, through then Governor Daniel D. Tompkins, when he was stationed in the Army at Sackett's Harbor, New York. Later, when Irving needed a name for country schoolteacher in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", he remembered the soldier he had met and used his name for the pompous schoolteacher, much to the chagrin of the real Ichabod Crane.
