Babb (Bird), Mary (Mary Alice) Alice b. May 8, 1850 d. November 21, 1926 Alice Bird Babb was one of the seven founders of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), one of the pioneer societies for women, that was founded on January 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Today, P.E.O. has grown to almost a quarter of a million members in chapters in the United States and Canada. The P.E.O. Harlan, James b. August 26, 1820 d. October 5, 1899 Republican Congressman from Iowa. He served in the US Senate from 1855-1865. He resigned from the Senate when he was appointed as Secretary of the Interior by President Andrew Johnson and served until 1866. He was reelected to the Senate in 1867 and served until 1873. Mansfield, Arabella b. August 23, 1846 d. August 1, 1911 Lawyer, Suffragist. Born Belle Aurelia Babb at Sperry Station in Des Moines County, Iowa, she became the first female lawyer in the United States. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1866 and taught at Simpson College for a year before returning to her home in Mount Pleasant to study law with her brother, Washington Babb. She married natural history professor John Mansfield in 1868, and both she and her husband passed the bar exam in June of 1869. Newbold, Joshua G. b. May 12, 1830 d. June 10, 1903 Iowa Governor. A native of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, he served as the Governor of his home state from 1877 to 1878. He also served as a Member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, and Lieutenant Governor of Iowa from 1876 to 1877. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army. He died in 1903. Stone, George Augustus b. October 13, 1834 d. May 16, 1901 Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was then commissionedd first as Major of the 4th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, then as Colonel and commander of the 25th Iowa Volunteer Infantry regiment. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". Swan, Charles A. b. May 29, 1838 d. January 19, 1914 Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private, in Company K, 4th Iowa Cavalry. In a conflict with Confederates at Selma, Alabama, on April 2, 1865, Private Swan captured the flag and color bearer of the 11th Mississippi, Infantry.
