Born in Black Rock, New York, he began his life as part of a proud familial history that extended back to days of George Washington and the revolution, his great-grandfather helping to manufacture the first cannon balls used in the war. Taylor, Annie Edson b. October 24, 1855 d. March 29, 1921 American Folk Figure. A teacher in Bay City, Michigan, was the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel, accomplishing this feat on her birthday in 1901. Both she and her barrel survived, but she did not profit from the stunt financially. Webb, Capt. Matthew b. January 19, 1848 d. July 24, 1883 He was the first person to swim across the English Channel, doing so in 21 hours and 45 minutes on August,24 and 25, 1875. A year earlier, he became the first person to win the Royal Humane Society Gold Medal for trying to save a man who fell overboard the SS Russia. He was born in Dawley, Shropshire, England. Williams, LeRoy b. August 18, 1845 d. February 14, 1930 Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War in Company G, 8th New York Heavy Artillery, rising to 1st Lieutenant. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery during the battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia om June 3, 1864. His citation reads "Sergeant LeRoy Williams did voluntarily exposed himself to the fire of the enemy's sharpshooters and located the body of his colonel who had been killed close to the enemy's lines.
