Spaight Jr., Richard Dobbs b. 1796 d. November 17, 1850 US Governor, US Congressman. Spaight, the son of Constitution signer Richard Spaight, Sr., served as a member of the North Carolina state house of commons in 1819. He followed that as a state senator from 1820 to 1822. He was then elected as a U.S. Representative from North Carolina from 1823 to 1825. After leaving Congress, he once again became a state senator, this time for ten years. (1825-1835). Spaight, Richard Dobbs b. March 25, 1758 d. September 6, 1802 US Congressman, Governor of North Carolina, Signer of US Constitution. After the death of his parents this native of New Bern, North Carolina was sent to live with relatives in Ireland at the age of eight. His kinfolk made sure the young man received a good education which culminated with him reportedly graduating from the University of Glasgow just before his return to North Carolina in 1778.
