Avery, Col. Isaac Erwin d. July 2, 1863 Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Served during the Civil War as Colonel and comander of the 6th North Carolina Infantry. At the Battle of Gettysburg, on the evening of July 2, 1863, he led his Brigade as he stormed East Cemetery Hill trying to dislodge the Union forces. Halfway up the hill he was killed. His final words were "Tell my father I died with my face to the enemy."
