Dubuque, Julien b. January 10, 1762 d. March 24, 1810 Western Pioneer. Born in the area of Champlain, Quebec, he was a miner and the first European to settle in what would become the State of Iowa. In 1788, he became friends with Chief Peosta of the Fox Indians and received permission to search for lead. He married Peosta's daughter, started a settlement and the Spanish gave him a land grant in 1796. He remained there for the rest of his life, the village became the first city in Iowa, and was named Dubuque in his memory. He died of pneumonia. Peosta Native American Mesquaki Chief. He was the chief of the Mesquaki tribe that was located in which is now Dubuque County, Iowa. In 1788, European explorer Julien Dubuque was one of the first white men to settle in the area. After Dubuque received permission to mine lead in the area, he became close friends with Chief Peosta and supposedly married his daughter Potosa.
