Estonia Ferry Disaster Memorial [memorial] d. September 28, 1994 Erected in Stockholm, Sweden, the monument is dedicated to the memory of to the victims of the Estonia ferry disaster. On September 28, 1994, in stormy weather while en route from Tallinn to Stockholm, 852 people drowned when the ferry "Estonia" sunk in the Baltic Sea. Rescuers were able to save 137 and of the 852 reported lost many of their bodies were never recovered. With in the memorial's three wedge stone walls is the engraved names of those whom died. Franzen, Anders b. July 23, 1918 d. December 8, 1993 Naval Archaeologist. He was a Swedish marine technician most noted for having discovered the wreck of the 1628 Swedish galleon Vasa, at Stockholm Harbor in 1956. From 1959 to 1961, he conducted her salvage which resulted in the most complete ship of the era and is on display at the Stockholm Maritime Museum. He also participated in the exploration and salvage of the wrecks Kronan, Riksapplet, Resande Man and Lybska Svan. Sjöman, Vilgot b. December 2, 1924 d. April 9, 2006 Director, Writer. One of Sweden's most renowned directors. He challenged the establishment with films like "491" (1964) and "I am curious - yellow" (1967), which attacked sexual conventions and taboos. Those films also made his name internationally. Through his career he directed some 15 films, the last one "Alfred" in 1995, about Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. He made his debute as a writer in 1948 with the novel "Lektorn". Soderstrom, Elisabeth b. May 7, 1927 d. November 20, 2009 Swedish Opera Singer. A soprano, she sang a wide variety of roles in the world's principal theatres for over 50 years. Raised in Stockholm the child of a Swedish father and a Russian coloratura mother, she studied voice privately prior to training at Sweden's Royal Academy. Her operatic debut came at the Dottringholm Palace Theatre in 1947 as the title lead in Mozart's little known "Bastien and Bastienne". Wintzell, Bruno b. March 23, 1944 d. December 1, 2002 Singer, Actor and TV-personality. He was an opera tenor who also made his name as a popular singer and musical star. He starred in the musical "Hair" in Stockholm and "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Copenhagen. He was also offered the leading part in "Hair" in London and on Broadway, but had to reject the offerings.
