Mallory, George b. June 18, 1886 d. June, 1924 Mountaineer. He helped lead the first three expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s, and vanished while attempting to reach the summit. When a journalist asked why he wanted to climb the world's tallest mountain, Mallory famously replied, "Because it's there".
