Cavell, Edith Louisa [original burial site] b. December 4, 1865 d. October 12, 1915 Executed WWI British nurse. A native of Swardeston, England, the daughter of the vicar, Edith took up nursing. She accepted the position of matron at Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels. With the start of the war and German occupation of Belgium in 1914, the facility was converted into a military hospital treating German as well as captured British soldiers. Soon many were missing. Tomb of the Unknown Political Prisoner [memorial] During World War II, approximately 17,000 Belgians were involved in the resistance against their country's invaders. Many were public and political figures whom were either killed in action, executed or died in concentration camps. The monument in Brussels, Belgium, is placed over the recovered unknown cremated remains and dedicated to their memory by a grateful country.
