  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Senator, Idaho Governor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when commissioned a Captain in the 13th Kansas Volunteer Infantry. Promoted Colonel in 1863, he commanded a brigade with the Seventh Army Corps for the entire Frontier Campaign. For his military service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in 1865.   Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Sailor's Creek, Virginia on April 6, 1865. His citation reads "capture of flag of Savannah Guardmes (C.S.A.), after two other men had been killed in the effort."
