Berry, James Henderson b. May 15, 1841 d. January 30, 1913 US Senator, Governor of Arkansas. Born in Jackson County, Alabama his family moved to Arkansas in 1848 where, as a young boy, he worked on the family farm. His education was limited because of the illness and subsequent death of his mother. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he began his career as a retail merchant when he opened the first of several franchises of the Ben Franklin five-and-dime franchises in Arkansas.
