Chapman, William Williams b. August 11, 1808 d. October 18, 1892 US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced the practice of law in Middleton, Virginia. In 1835, he settled in Burlington, Iowa (then Michigan Territory), was elected as Colonel of the militia and became the first prosecuting attorney of the territory in 1836. Cole, George Edward b. December 23, 1826 d. December 3, 1906 US Politician. Member of the Oregon House of Representatives in 1852 and 1853. Became clerk of the US District Court of Oregon in 1859 and 1860. Relocated to Walla Walla Washington and was elected to Congress. George, Melvin Clark b. May 13, 1849 d. February 22, 1933 US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1881 to 1885 as a representative from Oregon. George received his formal education from Santiam Academy and Willamette University in Oregon. He was a member of the Oregon State Senate from 1876 to 1880 and Circuit Court judge from 1897 to 1907. Lane, Harry b. August 28, 1855 d. May 23, 1917 US Senator. Served as superintendent of the Oregon State Insane Asylum from 1887 to 1891. Elected Mayor of Portland, Oregon, serving from 1905 to 1909. Lovejoy, Asa Lawrence b. 1808 d. 1882 Early Oregon Pioneer of the 1840s. Portland, Oregon’s name dates back to a coin flip in 1845. Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove shared ownership of a choice 640-acre (259-hectare) clearing along the Willamette River, near its confluence with the Columbia. Lovejoy wanted to name the site “Boston,” but Pettygrove won the coin toss and named it “Portland,” after his hometown in Maine. Parrott, Walter Edward 'Jiggs' b. July 14, 1871 d. April 16, 1898 Major League Baseball Player. Born in Portland, Oregon, he was a third baseman and second baseman making his debut on July 11, 1892, for the Chicago Colts. For fours seasons, he played with Chicago Colts (1892-95), finishing his career with a record of 311 hits, 6 homeruns, 152 runs batted in and a .234 batting average. Simpson, Samuel L. b. 1845 d. 1899 Sam Simpson was an Oregon pioneer, poet, lawyer, publisher, failed editor, journalist and alcoholic. Best known for his poetry and his act of christening the Battleship Oregon. Wrote "Beautiful Willamette". A collection of his work, The Good-Gated West, was published in 1910. Thayer, William Wallace b. July 15, 1827 d. 1899 US Politician. A lawyer in New York, William Thayer moved to Oregon in 1862 to practice law with a brother. Lived for a time in Lewiston, Idaho and served as District Attorney for the Idaho Territory in 1866, and from 1866?67 served a session in the Idaho Territorial House of Representatives. Back in Oregon, he was elected Governor of the State of Oregon in 1878 and served a single term. This was followed by a seat on the State Supreme Court, and from 1888 to 1890 was the Chief Justice.
