Returning to Nicaragua after he graduated, Somoza entered congress in 1950 and was president of the chamber of deputies when he became first acting president, then president upon his father's assassination in 1956. Somoza Garcia, Anastasio b. February 1, 1896 d. September 29, 1956 Nicaraguan President, Military Leader. After the end of United States military intervention in Nicaragua in 1933, he rose to power as head of the national guard.
