Born in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1932, her family emigrated to the USA in 1940 where she was trained by her father who was a ballet dancer. She joined the Grand Ballet de Monte Carlo in 1947. Moved to England and joined the Sadler's Wells Ballet Company in 1950. She was appointed prima ballerina in 1955.
