His song "Pink Moon" was used in a Volkswagen commercial. It is claimed that his death from an overdose of anti-depressants was a suicide. Hailwood, Mike b. April 2, 1940 d. March 23, 1981 Sportsman. The son of a wealthy Oxford motorcycle dealer, Stan Hailwood, he began racing motorcycles competitively in 1957. By 1961 he was riding for the MV Agusta factory, winning four 500cc World Championships. He then moved to Honda in 1966 and won four more World Championships in the 250 and 350cc classes. Twelve TT wins on the Isle of Man were added to his successes.
