Davenport, Thomas b. July 9, 1802 d. July 6, 1851 Inventor. A blacksmith, in the 1830s he experimented with the assistance of his wife Emily and fellow inventor Orange Smalley. In 1835 he patented the first electric motor, and used it to power a model railway. Convinced of the motor's commercial possibilities, he moved to New York City and attempted to attract investors by demonstrating how it operated a printing press and other machines. Ormsbee, Ebenezer Jolls b. June 8, 1834 d. April 3, 1924 Vermont Governor. He was educated at academies in Brandon and South Woodstock and taught school while studying law, winning admission to the bar in 1861. The same year he enlisted in the "Allen Grays," a Brandon militia company, which became Company G, First Vermont Regiment at the start of the Civil War. Ormsbee was elected Second Lieutenant, and served until the unit was mustered out at the end of its three month enlistment.
