He was given his first guitar when he was 11 years old. He graduated from Willcox High School in 1938. He began singing and after finishing high school, he worked for a short time as a performer at a Phoenix radio station. He later began a rodeo bull riding career. The studio's making westerns always stipulated the performer would furnish their own horse and wardrobe.
