Mauk, John Watson b. January 1, 1840 d. August 19, 1898 Civil War Union Army Soldier. He gained notoriety as the soldier who killed Confederate Lieutenant General Ambrose Powell hill in the last days of the Civil War. Mustered in as a Private in Company G, 138th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 29, 1862, he served through the end of the war, receiving promotions to Corporal (March 1, 1865) and to Sergeant (May 1, 1865) before his honorable muster out on June 23, 1865.
