Cooper, Thomas Sidney b. September 26, 1803 d. February 7, 1902 English artist. His early life was marred by poverty. He was educated at the Royal Academy schools, where he was encouraged by Sir Thomas Lawrence. In 1827 he moved to Brussels where he taught art. At this time he met the animal painter Verboeckhoven, who strongly influenced his work. Tourtel, Mary b. January 28, 1874 d. March 15, 1948 Artist, she is best remembered as the creator of Rupert Bear. Born Mary Caldwell into an artistic family and growing up studying art she ended up marrying the editor of The Daily Express newspaper Herbert Tourtel. Rupert the Bear was created in the 1920s as competition with The Daily Mail newspaper and their character Teddy Tail created by Charles Folkard. She retired in 1934 after beginning to go blind.
