Guzman, Jacobo Arbenz b. September 14, 1913 d. January 27, 1971 President of Guatemala. He served as the elected head of his country from March 15, 1951 to June 27, 1954. A reformist who began to nationalize the fruit industry, Guzman was overthrown in a CIA-orchestrated coup in 1954 because it was feared he was getting too close to the Soviet Union's sphere of influence.
