Caffrey, John Joseph b. October 23, 1891 d. February 23, 1953 World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Birr, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Rigiment, British Army. On November 16, 1915, actions near La Brique, France, a man was badly wounded and lying in the open unable to move, in full view of and about 350 yards from the enemy's trenches. Nicholls, Harry b. April 21, 1918 d. September 10, 1975 World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Nottingham, England, he served as a Lance Corporal in the 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. On May 21, 1940, Lance Corporal Nicholls was in command of platoon during a counter attack at River Scheldt, Belgium. As he advanced his platoon, he was wounded in the arm by shrapnel, but continued to lead his section forward under heavy enemy fire.
