Benton, Lemuel b. 1754 d. May 18, 1818 US Congressman. A native of Granville County, North Carolina, he served as a Colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Elected to represent South Carolina's 3rd District and as At-Large in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1793 to 1799. He was defeated in 1798.
