Smith, Samuel Emerson b. March 12, 1788 d. March 4, 1860 Governor of Maine. He was born in Hollis, New Hampshire, graduated from Harvard University in 1808, and became an attorney in Wicasset, Maine, then part of Massachusetts. He served in the Massachusetts legislature in 1819, and after Maine attained statehood he served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1820 to 1821.
